Three Steps to Obtaining Your Driver’s License

If you are 16 years old or older, you can obtain your driver’s license in three easy steps. You first need to follow mandatory theoretical and practical classes to obtain your learners license. The second step is to then obtain your probationary license before finally receiving your regular driver’s license.

1. Obtaining your learner’s license:

Register for courses at Driving School Liberté and start your phase 1 mandatory theoretical classes of the Road Safety Education Program (RSEP). These classes consist of 5 two hour sessions spread out over a minimum of 28 days. The last session is a classroom evaluation.

After passing your knowledge test, Driving School Liberté will give you a passing certificate.

The next step is to then go to a SAAQ branch for a vision test and to obtain your learner’s license. You need to bring with you the following documents:

  • Birth certificate or passport
  • Health insurance card
  • Written parental authorization for those who are under 18 years of age
  • Your Driving School Liberté passing certificate

2. Obtaining your probationary license:

After holding your learner’s license for 12 months, you will be allowed to pass the road test at the SAAQ and obtain your probationary license where you will be able to drive by yourself. Before taking the test, you need to complete the following steps:

Take the mandatory theoretical classes from the Road Safety Education Program Phases 2 – 4. You will also be taking in-car sessions.

  • Phase 2 consists of guided driving – Minimum of 28 days
  • Phase 3 consists of semi-guided driving – Minimum of 56 days
    • During these sessions, you will have 2 evaluations at your in-car sessions.
  • Phase 4 consists of semi-guided to independent driving – Minimum of 56 days
    • By now 10 months of your driving sessions will be complete

Go to a SAAQ service center and take the knowledge test.

  • After passing this test, your last in car session will be a formative evaluation before your road test

Complete your SAAQ road test.

  • Once you have passed, you will receive your probationary license
  • With this license:
    • You have a zero-alcohol rule when driving
    • You will lose your license if you get 4 demerit points

3. Obtaining your regular driver’s license

After 24 months of having your probationary license you will obtain your regular driver’s license!

Just remember:

  • Until reaching 21 years old, you have a zero-alcohol tolerance when driving
  • Your license will be revoked if you receive 4, 8 or 12 demerit points; this depends on your age
